Every spring, I spend more and more time fishing the waters around Punta Gorda and Charlotte Harbor.

When people think about tarpon fishing in Florida, Boca Grande usually comes to mind first, and for good reason. It’s one of the most famous tarpon fisheries in the world. But after years of fly fishing Charlotte Harbor, I’ve come to appreciate something different.

You don’t need hundreds of boats surrounding the same school of fish to have an incredible day on the water.

Some of the best tarpon eats I’ve ever witnessed happened in quiet water with nothing around except diving pelicans, nervous baitfish, and the occasional dolphin passing by. That’s one of the things that makes this area so special.

Charlotte Harbor is one of the largest estuaries in Florida, where freshwater from the Peace and Myakka Rivers meets the Gulf of Mexico. That mix creates an environment that’s constantly changing.

Wind direction, tide, water clarity, and bait movement all influence where the tarpon will be. One morning they may be rolling across open flats, and the next day they’ve moved miles away along a shoreline that looked empty the day before.

Things usually begin to pick up in April as the water warms and baitfish become more active throughout the harbor.

By May and into June, migratory tarpon are showing up in great numbers, making this one of the best times of year to target them on fly.
